Growing up, I never imagined the world of fashion would become my sanctuary, let alone my career. In my childhood home, resources were limited, and creativity wasn’t just encouraged—it was necessary. I was the youngest in my family, but also the tallest. By grade six, I was already 152 cm tall, making hand-me-downs a staple of my wardrobe.
But those hand-me-downs were never quite right. Pants were always too short, sleeves stopped well above my wrists, and nothing seemed to fit. So, I improvised. I combined fabrics to lengthen trousers, turned too-small shirts into sleeveless vests, and transformed what I had into something uniquely mine. Looking back, those early experiments weren’t just about clothing—they were about possibility. They were the seeds of a passion that would later blossom into a career centered on preloved fashion and sustainability.
French Vogue, Global Inspiration, and Personal Transformation
One day, everything changed. At a local flea market, I stumbled across a stack of vintage French Vogue magazines. Growing up in one of Washington D.C.’s underserved Wards, I had never encountered anything so luxurious, so aspirational. I didn’t know anyone who traveled internationally, worked in the arts, or pursued a creative passion. But those magazines opened my eyes to a world I never thought possible.
I carried them everywhere, their glossy pages filled with stories of elegance, artistry, and craftsmanship. They became my escape and my inspiration. Today, as I review footage from my lectures at the Berlin Fashion Film Festival and prepare for another event in Paris, I can still feel the weight of those magazines in my hands. They are a reminder of how far I’ve come and how deeply those early influences continue to shape my vision.
Living in cities like Paris, Milan, Johannesburg, and Dubai has also played a profound role in shaping my approach to fashion and sustainability. Paris and Milan taught me the value of timeless design, while Johannesburg introduced me to innovative textile reuse and natural dyeing methods. Dubai’s unique blend of old and new has challenged me to think differently about creating sustainability in modern spaces.
Sustainability and Luxury: A Powerful Partnership
It’s a misconception that luxury and sustainability can’t coexist. In fact, they complement each other beautifully. Buying designer pieces preloved, tailoring high-quality items to extend their life, and investing in timeless staples are all ways to marry luxury and sustainability effortlessly.
Sustainability is more than a trend—it’s a lifestyle. As we enter 2025, I encourage others to embrace sustainable fashion, starting with their own wardrobes. One of the most transformative steps anyone can take is conducting a complete wardrobe analysis.
Recently, I worked with a client in China who believed she had “nothing to wear” and was ready to discard her entire wardrobe. Instead of replacing everything, we went through each piece together. With the help of a trusted tailor, we gave new life to items she already owned. This process reaffirmed my belief that most of us already have enough—we just need a little creativity to see the possibilities.
Preloved fashion isn’t just about saving money; it’s about individuality. Each piece tells a story, and wearing vintage or secondhand clothing gives you confidence, knowing your style is truly one of a kind.
A Commitment to Growth and Empowerment
My mantra for 2025 is simple: failure is a fortune. Every risk I’ve taken and every setback I’ve faced has been an opportunity to learn, evolve, and grow. I’ve made a commitment not to purchase any new clothing this year—a goal I maintained until moving to Dubai, where the climate demanded a shift in my wardrobe. Even then, I shopped thoughtfully, focusing on versatility and sustainability.
Fashion, for me, is about more than clothing—it’s about transformation. It’s about showing up for yourself and embracing the life you want, no matter where you start.
One of the most powerful moments of my career came after I published a deeply personal blog post. I shared my story of overcoming financial struggles, single parenthood, and the challenges of raising a neurodivergent child with a blood disorder. I wrote about how, even in my lowest moments, I held onto the belief that my story wasn’t over.
After that post, I received a message from a single mother who had given up on herself. Years of emotional abuse had left her feeling invisible and unworthy. Inspired by my story, she decided to enroll in school and used my thrifting tips to rebuild her wardrobe for this new chapter of her life. That moment reminded me of the power of sharing our journeys—it’s proof that change is always possible.
Your Style, Your Story
As we move into 2025, I encourage you to embrace your personal style. Don’t let magazines, influencers, or societal norms dictate how you should look or live. Take the time to discover what works for you and build a wardrobe that reflects your values and aspirations.
Fashion has the power to tell stories, spark change, and redefine possibilities. It’s proof that where you start doesn’t define where you can go.
