“Faith through the fire” isn’t just a beautiful theme—it’s a lived experience. When life’s storms beat down hard, we need a faith that stands like the house built on the rock: “the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (Matthew 7:25). That rock is Jesus, and one way we stay grounded in Him is by meditating on the Word—especially through worship.
For those of us who struggle to memorize scripture, worship songs become lifelines. Songs like Gene Moore’s Depending on You allow us to “hide the Word in our hearts” (Psalm 119:11) by singing truth until it becomes part of us. The chorus declares, “I will keep my mind on what You are able to do,” which echoes Ephesians 3:20 and its reminder that God is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think.” It also draws from Psalm 121:1, encouraging us to lift our eyes to where our help comes from.
The verse, “Weary but not worried, for You are my strength,” reflects Isaiah 40:29, while “Your joy is revealed” points to Psalm 16:11.
Another song, Covenant Keeping God, gives voice to the unshakable truth that God’s promises are final—His Word will not return void (Isaiah 55:11), and He is faithful to keep covenant with those who love Him (Deuteronomy 7:9).
When life feels uncertain, we can rest in knowing that God is working behind the scenes—“perfecting and covering me” (from Depending on You). Even in the darkness, we can boldly declare with Jeremiah: “Nothing is too hard for You” (Jeremiah 32:27).
Jesus often withdrew to quiet, solitary places (Luke 5:16), not to escape—but to realign. In the same way, when we sit in silence after listening to a song, meditating on the Word of God within it, worship in solitude, or listen to a song on repeat allowing the message to fill our minds, we’re tuning our hearts to the truth.
We’re calming our anxieties and anchoring our thoughts in God’s promises. In doing so, we strengthen our faith—especially in the fire.
Mindfulness Practice:
Find a quiet space. Play Depending on You or Covenant Keeping God. Let the lyrics wash over you. As a line speaks to your spirit, pause and repeat it aloud. Ask God to plant His truth deeper in you. End your time in silence, reflecting on one lyric or verse that reminds you: His promises still stand, and He is faithful through every fire.
