Fearless Faith: Breaking Through What Held Me Back

By Evg. FaLisa Jones

Fearless was never a word people used to describe me. As a young girl, I was afraid of many things, people, places, situations you name it. I was the youngest of three sisters, with a significant age gap, so my older siblings became my shield. This protection, though good intentioned, may have contributed to a posture of fear that seemed to hold me back from many things in life. If you’ve ever known someone full of potential, yet unable to see it in themselves, you’ll understand this struggle.

If you can relate to this, know there is hope. Scripture tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7 that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. However, fear still exists, it can serve a purpose for our protection and for reverence. But misplaced fear cripples confidence. Whether your confidence was broken, never nurtured, or never embraced, this kind of fear can keep you from living out God’s full plan for your life.

For many years, that was my reality. I feared stepping forward in the gifts God gave me for fear of rejection, fear of failure, and even fear of success. I hesitated to pursue my career, doubting my qualifications. I was reluctant to walk in my spiritual gifts, worrying that people wouldn’t receive me. I was afraid to use my voice in spaces that seemed too big for me. I lost time, opportunities, and potential success. Yet, I now see that God used that time to help me truly understand His will for my life.

As believers, accepting God’s will for our own lives causes our confidence to grow, enabling us to break through fear. God’s voice becomes stronger than any other, and we learn to trust Him even more than we trust ourselves. It isn’t about confidence in our abilities, but in God’s abilities. “When we embrace that God is omnipotent— all powerful, and that He knows all, sees all, and is all—our fears shrink in light of His supremacy.” This, my friend, is Fearless Faith, living out the scripture: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Phil. 4:13 NIV)

In Christ, we are called and chosen for a purpose. I’ve discovered that giving power to irreverent fear profits nothing and holds back the Kingdom of God. Breaking through this fearful posture didn’t happen overnight for me; it’s something I still pray through when it rises. God, through Paul’s letter to Timothy, warned us of how fear can impact our faith because fear and faith cannot thrive in the same place. I used to hear, “Do it afraid,” and sometimes that’s true, you will have to move forward despite your fear. But fear should never become your permanent posture. Fear should not drive your faith; instead, faith should filter out fear.

As Christians, we are called to live by faith, it is the foundation of our belief. As our faith grows, the grip of fear loosens, and we become free to walk in God’s will for us. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1 KJV). To have Fearless Faith, we must have the courage to believe God and the confidence to trust Him. This takes a deeper relationship with Him, learning His character and His voice.

Over the past twenty years, God has shown Himself to me in countless ways through many seasons. I have learned the art of “not looking down.” When a person afraid of heights is told to avoid looking down, it’s to help them keep moving higher. In your journey of faith, it’s time to elevate, don’t look down. God is calling you to rise up with Fearless Faith.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, today I am coming to you to help me become bolder and more fearless in my faith. I have chosen to place my trust in you as you elevate me in your will for my life. Help me to not look down or backwards, but to depend on the guidance and leading of your Spirit. Help me to know your voice and bring clarity into places I feel confused. Strengthen me in places I feel weak and give me the courage to conquer this day. Thank you for your love, stability, and power. I acknowledge you in all my ways knowing that you know all and see all and that you will direct my path. I declare that I will walk in fearless faith today.

In Jesus Name, Amen.
